While Barry Sanders is setting records at Oklahoma State and chasing the Heisman Trophy, his older brother, Byron, has been quietly carving out a solid career at Northwestern.
In fact, Byron Sanders has become one of Northwestern's all-time leading rushers. When he piled up 1,062 yards this year, he became only the third Northwestern player to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season.
Byron and Barry are close and proud of each other, but don't mistake one for the other.
"Hey, Sanders!" someone shouted to Byron after a home game in Evanston, Ill. "Which of the brothers are you supposed to be?"
Byron shot back: "If you had ever seen my brother run, you would never mistake anyone else for him."
Byron, who will be 22 in February, is 17 months older than Barry.
The brothers keep in touch, talking on the telephone every Saturday night during the season.
"He usually calls me, tells me what he did and then asks what I did."
