    The dreaded dacoit, known as the terror of the ravines, Nirbhay Gujjar, is dead - shot by police in the forests of Uttar Pradesh on Monday.

    Large numbers of onlookers gathered to see the body before police moved it swiftly for post-mortem.

    Police chased Gujjar for more than a decade. He was wanted in more than 200 cases of banditry, murder and kidnapping.

    And while many felt relief at the news, relatives and beneficiaries mourned his death. Some say they included police paid off to keep him informed of any swoops.
